Federal Grants
The Office of Rural Health Policy—
Several grant programs, including Rural Health Network Planning, Telehealth Network Grant and Rural Access to Emergency Devices.
U.S. Department of Education—
Offers Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program.
State Grants
The Wisconsin Primary Care and Psychiatry Shortage Grant provides financial assistance awards to primary care physicians and psychiatrists who agree to practice in underserved areas of Wisconsin. Up to twelve primary care physicians and up to twelve psychiatrists will be awarded each fiscal year. The minimum award is $20,800.
The Wisconsin Rural Physician Residency Assistance Program provides funds to expand and enhance graduate medical education training sites in rural Wisconsin, thus providing access to quality healthcare in rural communities.
Grants For Firefighters/EMS
National Association of EMTs—
Offers foundation scholarships to individuals interested in pursuing a career in EMS, either as a responder (EMR) or technician (EMT). Applications are accepted between March 1 and April 30. More.
FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Program—
Grant programs that are open to firefighters and EMS. More.
Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation—
The foundation will fund the purchase of up to $25,000 of equipment, public education, and scholarships. The foundation recognizes the needs of rural and volunteer departments and will consider their applications despite not being within 60 miles of a Firehouse Subs restaurant. Applications are accepted on a quarterly basis. More.
Grants/Loans for Hospitals
SBA 7(a) Guaranteed Loans—
Loan guarantees to financial institutions that provide loans to small businesses (including small healthcare practices) for working capital, equipment purchase, real estate purchase, building construction/renovation, business acquisition, and debt refinancing. More.
Grants for Oral Health
The DentaQuest Community Response Fund supports nonprofit organizations, activities, and events that address access to needed oral healthcare and community resources that improve oral health. More.
Grants for Students
Our office offers two repayment programs for health care professionals, including physicians, psychiatrists, dental hygienists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and certified nurse midwives). More.
Rural Wisconsin Health Cooperative—
The Annual Monato Rural Essay Prize provides a $2,500 award for the University of Wisconsin's Best Rural Health Paper. The submission deadline falls on June 1st of each year. The prize is given by the Hermes Monato, Jr. Memorial Fund.
The National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health and the Association for Rural Health Professional Coding (ARHPC) offer a $200 discount on a online self-study course for rural healthcare professionals to attain certification as a Rural Coding & Billing Specialist. With the discount the course is $699. There is no deadline for this opportunity.
Grants for Kids/Schools
Aldi Smart Kids Program—
The Aldi Smart Kids Program partners with organizations that make a positive impact on kids' health and wellness by providing funding and gift cards to organizations that promote kids being active and healthy. Applications accepted throughout the year, except January. More.
CHS Foundation—
Provides support at the state, regional and national level to grow high impact youth leadership programs. State or national projects that are ag focused and have an education, leadership development or career training component will be considered for funding. More.
KaBOOM!—
Playground grants to help communities build safe places for kids to play. More.
Salad Bars to Schools—
Salad Bars to Schools donates a 6-foot, five-well salad bar package to schools that serve at least 100 reimbursable meals daily. Any district or independent school participating in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) is eligible to apply. More.
Wisconsin Technical Incentive Grants—
The state of Wisconsin provides up to $1,000 per student to public school districts for students to obtain recognized credentials in certain industries with workforce shortages. There are a variety of opportunities related to health professions. A specialized program also exists for high school students to receive training in emergency medical services or firefighting, and provides $1,000 to schools and $500 to students upon successful completion of the program. Substance Use/Abuse/Recovery Grants
Christopher D. Smithers Foundation—
Awards grants for the prevention, treatment, and education about alcohol use disorder and other substance use disorders. Grant proposals may be sent at any time with a brief description of the program and budget, copy of non-profit status, and copy of the most recent annual report. More.
Hanley Family Foundation—
Supports organizations whose primary focus is to help individuals to recover from substance use disorder. There is no deadline for submitting a Letter of Inquiry, but the Foundation has a fiscal year ending May 31, and it conducts two funding cycles each each fiscal year. More.
Office of National Drug Control Policy—
An extensive report lists federal resources for rural communities affected by opioid use disorder (as of October 2018).
Community Grants
Alliant Energy Hometown Care Energy Fund—
Funds collected for the Hometown Care Energy Fund are paid to community-based nonprofit organizations for distribution to customers in need. Recipients may be residential or farm customers using either gas or electric power. More.
Bemis Foundation—
Communities may apply for grants of $1,000 and below for community enrichment. More.
Community Foundation of North Central Wisconsin—
Funding for innovative projects that have a positive impact on enriching life in communities in north central Wisconsin. More.
County Health Rankings—
Roadmaps to Health Coaching offers assistance from a community coach for communities who want to improve the health of their populations and work toward building a culture of health. Ongoing. More.
CPR Savers—
Community-based organizations that can demonstrate the need for an AED can apply for grants to cover all or part of the cost of getting one. Ongoing. More.
Medica Foundation—
Requests concept papers for big and innovative solutions that serve as incubators for ideas, catalysts for system change, and that address the underlying causes and factors inhibiting optimal health as part of the organization's Strategic Initiatives Program.
Medical College of Wisconsin—
Issues RFPs for funding to support communities. More.
Rural Feasibility Study Grant Program—
Funding for feasibility studies that will result in economic development in rural areas of Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin, including feasibility studies for healthcare organizations. More.
USDA Office of Rural Development
Lists several grant/loan programs for rural communities.
- The Community Facilities Program makes grants available to public bodies and private nonprofit corporations to provide them with technical assistance and/or training with respect to essential community facilities programs, and to identify and plan for community facility needs that exist in their area.
- The Special Evaluation Assistance for Rural Communities and Households helps small, financially distressed rural communities with proposed water and waste disposal projects.
- The Economic Development Loan and Grant Program provides funding for rural projects through local utility organizations.
- The Economic Impact Initiative Grants provides funding to assist in the development of essential community facilities in rural communities experiencing extreme unemployment and severe economic depression.
- The Multi-Family Housing Loan Guarantees works to provide financing to qualified borrowers to increase the supply of affordable rental housing in rural areas.
- The Telecom Program works to invest to rebuild infrastructure in rural by investing in broadband.
Grants for Farmers
ROPS Rebate Program—
Rebates for the partial cost of purchasing and installing a Rollover Protective Structure kit on tractors.
Grants for Tribes/Tribal Organizations
Strengthening the Tribal Response to Violence Against Native Women—
Training, technical assistance, and resources designed to help individual tribal governments and tribal communities strengthen the response to effectively address sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking. For tribal governments and programs that do not currently have Office on Violence Against Women grant funding. More.
